1. Visit the Panama Canal
The most iconic thing to do in Panama City, and something everyone should do, is to visit the Panama Canal! The Panama Canal is well known around the world and it’s vital to world trade. The canal stretches over 82 kilometers (51 miles) and is made up of artificial lakes, and of course, those thin canals you’ve likely seen in photos.
The Miraflores Locks is the Panama Canal visitor center and viewing deck. The center is home to a museum and the best seat in the house to watch huge ships navigate the canal.

2. Punta Culebra Nature Center
If you’re a wildlife lover then you’ll enjoy a visit to the Punta Culebra Nature Center. The great thing about this nature center is that you don’t have to leave the city to see some really cool wildlife.
The center isn’t huge and you only need an hour or so to explore the grounds. There is a large outdoor park where you can find iguanas and sloths and then also indoor enclosures featuring frogs, starfish and even turtles.

3. Explore Panama Viejo
Panama Viejo was actually the first city built on the pacific coast of the Americas and was an important trade route.
Because of this, the city was often visited by pirates. Unfortunately, pirates completely destroyed the city in 1671, and the ruins of the city’s former self only remain.
These days, the ruins are a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the perfect place to visit to learn about the city’s history and importance during that time. The site has interpretive signs in both English and Spanish and only takes an hour or so to explore.
4. Go on a day trip to Soberania National Park
Getting out of the hustle and bustle of Panama City is actually really easy and one of the best places to do it is at Soberania National Park. Located only 45 minutes from the city, Soberania National Park is a tropical paradise filled with wildlife. In fact, the park is known as one of the best places in Panama for bird watching.
5. Day trip to San Blas Islands
The San Blas Islands are one of Panama’s greatest treasures. You won’t find all-inclusive resorts with huge swimming pools here. Nor will you find mega cruise ships or mass tourism infrastructure. And that’s precisely what makes these remote palm tree islands so special.
Travel to the San Blas Islands is not easy. While you technically can rent a vehicle and drive from Panama City to the coast, it’s recommended that you take a San Blas Islands tour. When you factor in the cost of renting a vehicle, insurance, fuel, parking and boat transportation, it makes sense to join an organized tour.
6. Historic Portobelo & Isla Mamey

Portobelo is a small fishing village on the Caribbean coast of Panama that was once the greatest Spanish port in Central America and served as an important pathway for gold and treasures coming from Peru. Housing the colonial ruins of Fort San Jeronimo and Santiago Battery as well as the old customs house, which was used to house all of the plundered treasure from various regions of South America while awaiting shipment to Spain.

El Valle
El Valle de Anton is a town in central Panama. It’s in the crater of an extinct volcano, surrounded by mountains and cloud forest. To the north, Cerro Gaital National Park protects 3 hills: Cerro Gaital, Cerro Pajita and Cerro Caracoral. Its trails have ocean views and the park is home to hundreds of species of native birds, including the red-legged honeycreeper, the bay-headed tanager and the blue-crowned motmot.
Boquete
Boquete is a small town on the Caldera River, in western Panama. The surrounding Chiriquí Highlands are home to coffee plantations and the Barú Volcano National Park, to the west. Highlights in the park include the towering Barú Volcano and Los Quetzales Trail, which offers sightings of the elusive quetzal bird. North of town, the Bajo Mono Loop drive has expansive views of the forest.
